And Thou Brutus

A couple years ago I wrote a piece about domestic violence for a magazine in Australia. I received so much wonderful feedback, I felt at the time that it was well worth it. Because I consider myself a storyteller, I had set about writing several short stories about the issue.

Every betrayal begins with trust

Martin Luther King

Abuse, in all forms have always been a subject matter close to my heart. It doesn’t matter who perpetrates the act; male or female, the fact that it happens, and happens in silence or that most people turn a blind eye, irks me.

Like Caesar calling out Brutus, it’s an act of betrayal, made even more gross and egregious because of the person committing it. The damage is immeasurable and sometimes generational. Children suffer as much as the parents, and its hard work picking up the pieces.

I just wish, it weren’t so. But betrayal seems to be a part of life, and as Martin Luther King says, each betrayal begins with trust.

Surprisingly, so does the act of moving on. You must trust yourself, and the kindness of others.

Finding the courage to walk away, pick up the pieces, rebuild… that is a journey worth taking. It will be tough, but it is doable.
