If I claim to be a wise man.

I do not subscribe to the belief that it is difficult to change people’s habits; that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. There are numerous “old dogs” among the younger generation as well. There are many of us who have involuntarily decided to stop learning. Stuck in our ways, set in a mindset that is impervious to change. Perhaps it is the fear of failure, the daunting aspect of a new challenge which really is just another opportunity to gain new experiences, which puts most of us off.

The mind has an amazing capacity to keep learning. One percent more effort, one percent more persistence and one percent more focus over the course of a week is not too much to ask of yourself. When one considers that we could binge watch a series for hours on end, then to invest just 30 mins a day to reading, or learning something new, is a minor inconvenience for self-growth.

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don’t know

The know-it-all alter ego exists in all of us… perhaps it is hidden pride. We stunt our own growth when we choose to rest on our laurels. They are self-imposed moratoriums at odds with the speed of change that is happening around us. It is like we have reached the pinnacle of our learning abilities. There is a line from one of my favorite songs, Carry On my Wayward Son, by the band Kansas which goes like this

Masquerading as a man with a reason
My charade is the event of the season
And if I claim to be a wise man, well
It surely means that I don’t know

I aspire to maintain the posture of an eager student. It is possible to keep growing and to keep learning. Just as every day is a fresh start, so too is every day an opportunity to learn something new. The minute I cease to grow or to learn, is the moment I have ceased to live.
