How They Linger

Artwork by Johnny McDaniels @fiddlinpig

Some memories don’t need a red string around my finger.
The toxic and the precious, how they linger.
Ships sailing over the horizon
That’s what it felt like, a red tide,
Crimson
Silhouettes dipping out of view
Like a pit vipers bite,
Sudden
Emotions that overwhelm you
The sacrificial prey in this hunt
To you the flavor of the month.
Venom,
Right at the heart it got me
No longer in fashion
Loving on rations
Once the trending hashtag on IG
Now a used rag, I’m obscene
Over,
At the point of addiction
Romance is an affliction
Dripped fed
Like opium for my pain, but no cure for regret
I wish like you, I could easily forget.
Moments
But like inkblots on cotton
Blurred visions, it hurts, I feel rotten.
Move on,
To destinations unknown
Not even a second glance,
She disappeared in the distance
I was alone.
